Threshers Barn

Oxfordshire

DESIGN: Client-led, alongside Taylor & Turner.

BRIEF: To create a kitchen which would embody the charm and feel of the old farmhouse, but with the modern appeal of a contemporary barn conversion, embracing the nuances of its lofty proportions. The goal was to achieve a warm, inviting, and unpretentious space, with a timeless style that meets the practical needs of modern living for a young family.

Inspiration threads crossed from the Arts and Crafts movement, through to classic English kitchen design, combining architectural joinery with antique-inspired interior design elements to achieve a warm and classical, but truly functional, living space.

CABINETRY: The main functional area is a carefully curated grouping of bespoke traditional English cabinetry, hand-painted in Edward Bulmer's ‘Ethereal Blue’ and manufactured with a traditional quarter-round panel detail. Over-counter wall cabinets are glass fronted and set back, protecting the eye line and overall balance of the space. The island end panels, also in a quarter-round detail, are set between stop-chamfered newel posts. The breakfast bar section is flanked by inset drawer and storage sets, against an under-island tongue and groove back panel. Natural oak veneer internals, solid oak dovetail drawer boxes and bespoke inserts add warmth and contrast.

Opposite, twin bespoke dressers, manufactured from solid oak in a specialist-applied French polish finish, flank a central portrait window. Cornice detailing and glass fronts to the upper units, sectioned by slim glazing bars and a bespoke wine unit, make these stand-alone pieces truly unique.

FIXTURES & FITTINGS: A Lacanche range and natural Italian Arabescarto Vagli marble worktops throughout bring depth, character, and elegance to the scheme. The Shaws of Darwen 'Bradshaw' sink and Perrin & Rowe antique brass 'living’ finish tap set add to the modern-traditional farmhouse feel. 'Fine English Antique' handles by Armac Martin adorn cabinetry throughout. Behind the scenes, Miele appliances bring essential functionality to this busy family hub.

SCULLERY/LAUNDRY ROOM: Off the kitchen, a large scullery/laundry room provides ample excess storage and functionality. A bank of full-height double-door cupboards, again with hand-painted traditional English fronts with quarter-round detail, features a large central horizontal rail, cornice detailing and traditionally set ventilation holes. Matched under-counter cupboards are set into tongue and groove panelling, cut to meet the rest of the cabinetry. The pantry cupboard is functionally maximised through high-level shelves, integrated spice racks and low-level wicker baskets storage.
